Our department is home to the first entomology program in the nation and consistently ranks as one of the top places in the world to study insects. Today, our faculty work throughout the world to make discoveries and share knowledge about insects. Our department offers an integrative program recognized for collaborative research that encompasses the full span of the field of entomology. This position is for a Technician IV who will implement the set-up of the Sinclair lab and thereafter contribute to ongoing research, colony maintenance, ordering, and compliance for activities in the laboratory. The employee will assist with the ordering and set-up of equipment and consumables in the laboratory, will liaise with vendors to arrange any installation visits, and with Cornell facilities to arrange any required infrastructure. They will learn the basic operations of each instrument, arrange necessary consumables, and write SOPs, in collaboration with past and present Sinclair lab personnel. They will ensure the laboratory has standardized procedures for laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, data husbandry, and recording and monitoring colony health. They will assist in acquiring appropriate permits (and in complying with any permit conditions).
Once the lab is set up, the employee will be responsible for day-to-day ordering and compliance; assisting with scheduling, maintenance, troubleshooting, generally ensuring that lab facilities remain tidy and functional; learning at least some standard laboratory procedures; basic training of new personnel in laboratory practices, and our standard procedures. Over time, the employee will develop expertise in setting up and conducting experiments one or more of the laboratory's core activities: insect thermal biology, metabolism; biochemistry & molecular biology, and contribute to research in that area (or those areas).
Note that the emphasis on different responsibilities will shift as the lab moves from set-up to active research; the percentages reflect the average over the year of the contract.
This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of extension contingent on successful performance and continued funding.

Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination. Experience working in a research laboratory in the life sciences. This position requires an ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication (written and oral, in English), organization, and interpersonal skills are required. Attention to detail, ability to follow instructions and protocols, sound judgement, logical troubleshooting, a strong work ethic, and ability to multitask and set priorities are all essential. A willingness to develop new skills and learn new procedures, and to develop working relationships with a diversity of people. Solid understanding of laboratory safety protocols and procedures to ensure compliance. Familiarity with standard computer software for word processing and data management, experience with software for instrument control, data acquisition, and data analysis (and a willingness to learn specific new software environments). Must be able to lift 20 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with live insects in a research laboratory.
- Experience/background in physiology, biochemistry, and/or molecular biology.
- Experience working with complex laboratory equipment.
