We seek candidates with expertise in arthropods of human and animal health significance. Areas of interest may include cellular to global scales; interactions of arthropod vectors with pathogens, symbionts and other microbes using state-of-the-art genomic and/or other technologies; basic and applied questions at the individual, population, community or ecosystem levels; and big data modeling within a multidisciplinary, systems biology and One Health approach. The successful candidate will be expected to build an internationally prominent research program by securing competitive external funding, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, recruiting and mentoring graduate students to graduation, and contributing to undergraduate and graduate teaching. A collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to research and funding is preferred. Teaching expectations will include instruction of a three-credit Medical Entomology course. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in department, college and university service, and professional service and outreach.
Required qualifications: An earned Ph.D. in Entomology, Ecology, Veterinary Science, Epidemiology, Public Health, Microbiology/Parasitology, or related discipline; a record of excellent scholarship commensurate with their career stage as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications; and potential to be successful in securing funding for research on arthropods of human or animal health significance.
Desired qualifications: Postdoctoral and teaching experience; demonstrated training and expertise in molecular, genetic or quantitative approaches to investigation in entomological, ecological and/or biological/medical sciences; experience in integrating multidisciplinary areas of medical/veterinary entomology; evidence of effective collaboration and mentorship; record of funding from competitive national or international agencies.
The Department of Entomology is internationally recognized for its commitment to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and extension at local, regional, national, and international levels. Our programs encompass basic and applied research on arthropods in diverse systems including agriculture, forestry, medical/veterinary, aquatic, and a diversity of other ecosystems. Further, faculty in the department have strong ties to the Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior program, the NSF-funded KBS Long Term Ecological Research program, and are collaborators in the Centers for Disease Control-funded Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-borne Disease.
