This is a 12-month appointment at Mid-Florida Research and Education Center, University of Florida. However, there is an option that the candidate can work out of Dr. Cindy McKenzie’s USDA-ARS laboratory in Fort Pierce, Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program in biological control of invasive ornamental and landscape pests that leads to publishing research in peer-reviewed journals. Duties will include: conduct applied research on previously funded projects on invasive thrips and whitefly control; develop protocols and conduct research on ornamental banker plant based management of invasive pests of interest; develop research program for integration of predatory mites, parasitoids and entomopathogenic fungi in an IPM program for invasive pests; serve as a co-principal investigator on sponsored research projects; manage a portfolio of sponsored research projects; prepare project funding proposals; write project reports and professional articles; present project findings to clients and stakeholder groups; participate on graduate student supervisory committees. Specific extension duties Extension programs (in-service training, field days, demonstrations, etc.); the publication of extension articles in IFAS' Electronic Data Information Source, newsletters, clientele-oriented trade magazines; and through direct outreach. Handle daily correspondence with clients and respond to public inquiries for information; provide general support to the Entomology and Nematology Department and the hiring unit as needed.
Qualifications: A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in entomology or closely related discipline with a specialization in IPM or biological control using arthropod natural enemies is required. In addition, the candidate must have experience in handling invasive ornamental pests of regional importance including MEAM/MED whitefly, broad mite, Thrips parvispinus, western flower thrips, chilli thrips, common blossom thrips, and various mealybug species. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, interdisciplinary national/international collaboration, and procurement of extramural funding. Previous experience with extension activities, molecular biology, thrips taxonomy, phytoseiid mite rearing, banker plant system, application of chemical insecticides and entomopathogenic fungi would be advantageous. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability. Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
