Position description The Zoghbi lab is seeking to hire a Junior Specialist to assist with a National Institutes of Health grant research project at the University of California, Merced, titled: Molecular Mechanisms of The Human Mitochondrial ABC Transporter ABCB10. This role will require work to be done under the supervision of Dr. Maria Zoghbi.
The Junior Specialist will be responsible for assisting with the following experiments and research duties:
Expression of soluble and membrane proteins in bacteria and insect cells.
Purification of proteins (including diverse ABC transporters) using standard biochemical techniques.
Reconstitution of ABC transporters in nanodiscs and liposomes for functional assays.
Western blots and standard gel electrophoresis analysis of protein samples.
Spectroscopic assays to measure ATP hydrolysis activity of the transporters and to evaluate the effect of regulatory molecules on the protein's activity.
Luminescence resonance energy transfer studies to measure conformational changes in ABC transporters.
Data analysis and presentation of experimental results.
General help with purchases and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Help training students in techniques and procedures commonly used in the lab. Qualifications
Basic qualifications A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field. At least two years of laboratory experience. Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills. Willingness to learn new methods and skills. Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
Preferred qualifications Experience with the production of membrane proteins is highly desirable. Prior laboratory experience expressing, purifying, and reconstituting ATP-binding cassette transporters constitutes an advantage for this position. Application Requirements
