Job Summary
We are seeking a Research Technician to join the Parker lab at Caltech to contribute to investigations on the behavior and neural basis of interspecies interactions in rove beetles. The work will include behavioral data collection and quantitative analysis of interspecies interactions as well as neuroanatomical staining and imaging techniques.
The Research Technician will receive support from a postdoc committed to the technical and conceptual training, mentorship, and career development of the candidate. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in gaining research experience before applying to PhD programs and/or those seeking training in experimental and computational neuroethology. Our laboratory values inclusion and diversity, fostering a supportive environment that encourages the growth and development of all team members.
Essential Job Duties
Participate in the design, setup, and collection of behavioral interspecies interaction experiments using custom-built behavioral arenas.
Work with machine learning pose estimation tools to track multi-animal pose during interspecies interactions.
Develop and/or utilize existing analysis pipelines to perform behavioral feature extraction, clustering, modeling of time-varying behavioral data, and other data analysis techniques.
Manual annotation and labeling of key behaviors during interspecies interactions.
Contribute to neuroanatomical experiments, including but not limited to beetle brain dissections, immunostaining, and confocal imaging.
Communicate effectively with mentors, lab members, and other support groups through both written reports and oral presentations.
Basic Qualifications
Completed or near completion of an undergraduate degree in biology, physics, engineering, computer science or related field, with interest in neurobiology and behavior.
Technical competence and demonstrated experience with scientific programming, such as Matlab, Python, and/or other programming languages.
Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, set priorities, strong work ethic, and seek technical input from diverse sources.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in some (but not necessarily all) of the following areas: computational neuroethology/quantitative behavioral analysis, behavioral data collection, work with small insects, immunostaining and/or neural imaging.
Experience with machine learning tracking software and/or version control software.
Data analysis experience and demonstrable quantitative skills.
Interest in neuroethology, ecology, and quantitative behavioral analysis.
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
