This position is located in the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department, Naval Station Great Lakes, Great Lakes, IL. The purpose of this position is to provide the technical expertise to design and implement a program of maintenance for the Golf Course, driving range, practice putting green, which includes the greens, tees, fairways, roughs, the irrigation system, related facilities and equipment. Incumbent is responsible for maintaining the golf course within budgetary limitations.
Incumbent determines the requirements of pesticides, chemicals, fertilizer and grass seed needed for the upkeep of an 18 hole Golf Course. Course includes greens, tees, fairways, roughs, practice range, equipment and maintenance building, equipment storage building, chemical storage and mixing building, irrigation system, pump house and ponds within the confines of the Veterans Memorial Golf Course. Tours the Golf Course to review work in progress and to observe the condition of the Golf Course.
Ensures the proper functioning of the irrigation system and determines the correct amount of water applied on greens, tees and fairways under various climatic conditions.
Directs the amounts and types of soil nutrients and fertilizers to be applied to greens, fairways and roughs. Must know how to take soil samples and decipher results for necessary amendments. Administers amounts and types of soil nutrients and fertilizers for the greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
Responsible for the selection, application, storage and otherwise safe handling of pesticides and other toxic substances. Takes preventative measures to prevent damage to the course by small animals. Oversees the hazardous Waste Program for the Golf Course.
Must be able to recognize turf damage by fungus and insects, apply fungicide, pesticide and nematicides to correct problem. Must be able to calibrate spreaders and sprinklers so that the correct amount of materials will be applied to designated areas.
Responsible for the equipment and its repair needed to maintain the Golf Course at an acceptable standard. Offers advice in the selection of new and replacement equipment for the Golf Course and its maintenance. Insures through the mechanic that the equipment assigned is at an acceptable standard to maintain the Golf Course. Plans changes and improvements to the Golf Course.
Responsible for the requisition, storing and inventories of equipment, pesticides, fertilizers and other materials required in maintaining the Golf Course.
Responsible for the supervision of several Laborers (NA-3502-03) and seasonal workers as needed. Incumbent is also responsible for training and job assignments for the Golf Course Maintenance Facility. Approves leave and verifies Kronos Timekeeping for employees. Provides job descriptions for employees. Prepares employees annual performance evaluations.
Prepares and submits annual budget estimates for course maintenance within the framework of a specific allocation. Submits request for purchase of all needed materials, new equipment and maintenance of items on hand. Maintains records as required by the MWR Department. Responsible for snow removal, by truck, of MWR facilities

Qualifications

A qualified candidate possesses the following:
Required to have a broad background in Golf Course maintenance and operations, having experience and knowledge of established agronomic practices either attained through academic achievements or practical experience.
Required to have knowledge of various types of pests and pesticides required for treatment and be certifiable in herbicide application.
Experience in determining the method of operation and analysis of complex problems and interpretations of procedures.
Required to have a working knowledge of and professional expertise in Golf Course equipment.
Required to have knowledge and understanding of the rules of golf along with the ability to view golf course from the perspective of the patron.
Must possess ability to lead and supervise employees.
A Valid state driver's license current CPR/First Aid Certificate, and State and Federal pesticide mixing licenses are required
