We seek applications from individuals with experience in the uneven impacts of climate change and related environmental processes on vulnerable communities, preferably with an urban focus, in any world region. Our ideal candidate is expected to conduct theoretical and empirical work in Human Geography with a particular focus on Climate Justice and/or Environmental Justice. We are open to a range of topical interests, including the uneven impacts of the physical effects of climate change such as sea level rise, increased wildfires, or more frequent severe weather; the exacerbation of existing environmental inequalities such as exposure to flooding or heat; or the effects of climate change mitigation, such as the unequal consequences of higher fuel costs or carbon taxes, or how to achieve a just transition away from fossil fuels. Candidates may use qualitative, quantitative, geospatial, or mixed methods in their work.
The successful candidate is expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active and independent research program, and provide service to the Department, the University, and the profession. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced undergraduate courses on human geography, climate and environmental justice, and graduate seminars. As part of a cluster hire within the School of Earth, Environment, and Society, an interdisciplinary scholar is preferred who can interact with colleagues in Atmospheric Science and Earth Science & Environmental Change, as well as our school-wide major of Earth, Society, & Environmental Sustainability. The candidate will also have significant opportunities to develop collaborations with other departments and units across campus such as African-American Studies, Journalism, Latina/Latino Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Urban and Regional Planning, the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, and the Center for Indigenous Science.
Candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with women and underrepresented minority students or faculty through teaching, mentoring, or administration are especially encouraged to apply.
