Open Position: Managing Editor
The Entomological Society of America is seeking a managing editor to oversee the production and peer review of ESA’s scholarly publications. In this role, you will work with our publisher, Oxford University Press, to manage the peer review system and process, oversee QC of manuscripts, and support the strategic development of ESA’s publications. These include five subscription-based, peer-reviewed journals; two open access, peer-reviewed journals; one editor-reviewed quarterly magazine; and one open access, editor-reviewed technical reference.

The primary duties of ESA’s managing editor include:
- Managing the online manuscript submission and peer-review system for all ESA journals, and providing technical support for authors, editors, and reviewers as needed.
- Overseeing the quality control process for ESA’s journals including the work of ESA’s outsourced QC company and the ESA publications assistant.
- Directing the production process for ESA’s journals, monitoring the work of ESA’s publisher as they work with authors, and ensuring both timely and accurate journal production and author satisfaction with the process.
- Working with the editors-in-chief and editorial boards to develop the vision and strategic direction for each journal, leading content development efforts, and working with ESA’s publisher to develop and implement marketing efforts.
- Supervising and managing the work of the ESA publications coordinator.
- Collaborating with ESA’s director of publications to review and interpret data from ESA’s publishing operations in order to improve performance and identify opportunities for growth.
- Responding to author inquiries and providing assistance to authors as needed.
- Responding to inquiries from ESA’s editors-in-chief, volunteer subject/section editors, and reviewers, and providing assistance as needed.
- Regularly reviewing and updating web content related to ESA’s journals.
- Assisting the communications manager as needed with promotion of ESA’s scholarly publications.
- Providing administrative support to the editorial boards that oversee ESA’s scholarly publications and ESA’s Publications Council.
- Attending ESA’s Annual Meeting and providing support to editorial board and Publications Council meetings.
- Staying abreast of developments in scholarly publishing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Professional Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or communications, and 4 years of experience in a publishing environment, or equivalent combination. Some supervisory experience preferred.
- Ability to manage and prioritize many different tasks simultaneously;
- Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills;
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe applications, and comfortable with new software and systems.
- Knowledge of manuscript tracking systems and the print/electronic publication process preferred.
This is a full-time position (40 hours/week). ESA is headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland, but the position is open to US-based remote applicants. Occasional travel to ESA’s annual meeting, branch meetings, or strategy meetings may be required. This position reports to the director of publications, communications, and marketing, and is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
