Assistant Project Scientists in Entomology

The Department of Entomology at the University of California invites applicants for 1 Assistant Project Scientist in Entomology to conduct applied research for the Dr. Paul Rugman-Jones Lab in Riverside, CA and 1 Assistant Project Scientist in Entomology in Taiwan. These positions have an anticipated start date of as soon as possible and an annual salary range of $68,400 to $87,000.


Riverside Position
The purpose of the Riverside position is to conduct experimental evaluations to support the development of the sterile insect technique (SIT) for control of the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, and its use as part of an overall area-wide control strategy. This is a term limited position with the option to renew, pending funding. The incumbent will be encouraged to participate in the development of promising projects for continued funding.


Required qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of application include:
Ph.D. in Entomology or a closely related field.
Successful candidate must be comfortable working independently in laboratory and agricultural field environments.


Preferred qualifications for this position include:
History of working with sterile insect techniques and the mass-rearing of insects.
Experience conducting IPM, ecological or agricultural field research specifically in trial design, data collection and statistical analysis.


Additional qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of hire include:
Must have or be able to acquire CA driver's license.


Taiwan Position
The purpose of the Taiwan position conduct research on a complex of shothole borer species (Euwallacea fornicatus) and their parasitoids, with the ultimate goal of establishing a method to mass rear the parasitoids, in order that the suitability of the parasitoids as potential biological control agents may subsequently be assessed. The incumbent will be located in Taiwan, working in cooperation with Dr. Lan-Yu Liu at National Pingtung University (NPTU). This is a term limited position with the option to renew, pending funding. The incumbent will be encouraged to participate in the development of promising projects for continued funding.

Required qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of application include:
Ph.D. in Entomology or a closely related field.
Successful candidates are expected to conduct laboratory and field research, to communicate effectively both in Chinese and English, and to work independently.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Minimum one year of experience conducting field surveys to locate, collect, and identify natural enemies and their ambrosia beetle hosts.
Experience of preparing infested host plant material for shipping to the United States, in accordance with a USDA import permit.

Additional qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of hire include:
A Taiwanese driver's license is required for travel within Taiwan.
