Academic Coordinator II - Strategic Engagement Director & Lassen Field Station Director
The University of California, Davis, Natural Reserve System (NRS) manages six of the forty-one reserves that comprise the largest and most diverse set of university-owned and operated reserves in the world. These reserves include examples of nearly every major ecosystem in the state. They provide secure sites for research, instruction, and public outreach. They enable monitoring of environment health, and provide a baseline for ecosystem restoration, in the context of California's rapidly growing population and the changing global environment.
NRS makes relatively undisturbed samples of the state's natural ecosystems and the facilities needed to support teaching and research - available not only to students, teachers, and researchers from the University of California, but to any qualified user from any institution, public or private, throughout the world.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Director of the UC Davis Natural Reserve System (NRS): 1) Coordinate strategic engagement across all UC Davis Reserves, and 2) Manage, coordinate, and support field programs at the Lassen Field Station (LFS).
Across the UC Davis NRS, working with the Director, Associate Director, and Reserve Directors, develop fundraising strategies, coordinate events, create and curate donor lists. Seek supplemental funding for through grants and contracts from external funding agencies. Provide content for NRS social media.
At LFS, facilitate and implement research, education, and public service mission of the NRS. Review proposals, develop policies and coordinate use of LFS. Liaise with Lassen Volcanic National (LAVO) Park staff, coordinate the application submittal and approval process. Develop facilities for research and class use in coordination with LAVO. Give lectures and lead field trips for classes and the public. Represent the NRS and the University at public meetings, government hearings, and scientific meetings at the local and national level.
COORDINATION OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (85%)
Strategic Engagement
Coordinates with campus Development on fundraising strategies for the UC Davis Natural Reserves. Coordinates with reserve directors on general and specific fundraising targets and goals for individual reserves. Organizes and runs outreach events for reserve-level, campus-level, and statewide campaigns, including in-house programs and tabling at regional events. Cultivates new and recurring donors. Creates and curates donor lists. Seeks extramural funding opportunities from agencies, foundations, etc.
Coordinates with campus Strategic Communications and Government Relations on NRS public communications and outreach messaging. Provides content and manages NRS social media. Develops marketing materials, including newsletters, brochures, and gift-recognition cards.
Works with the UC NRS systemwide office on statewide outreach and fundraising efforts.
Research Coordination
Directs use of the Lassen Field Station (LFS) in support of the scientific and educational mission of the Natural Reserve System in coordination with the staff of the Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO). Oversees research and teaching applications, coordinates permission for use, and provides oversight and guidance to users. Ensures that reserve activities comply with campus environmental health and safety and animal care regulations, informs users of health and safety issues, and ensures that all other applicable policies are followed.
Leads strategic planning activities for LFS. Recruits faculty towards use of the reserve for teaching and research. Provides student development opportunities at the LFS, including internships, mentorships, volunteering. Provides educational opportunities at LFS for K-12 students, teachers, and other members of the public.
Represents LFS and the University in activities with Lassen Park Foundation, the Lassen Association, and agencies, government officials, public meetings and planning groups with respect to environmental-educational-political matters.
Participates in academic activities that support NRS objectives, including seminars, symposia, scientific meetings and field research.
Administration
Responsible for all aspects of administering the LFS, including use applications, waivers, purchasing, and budgets. Assists and serves as backup for the Associate Director with campus administration, including annual reports, records of reserve use, and bibliographic data; real estate transactions; and strategic initiatives.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (10%)
Attends annual meetings of appropriate organizations including the Organization of Biological Field Stations and the UC NRS Management Workshop. Masters new computer skills as necessary, including webpage creation and self-publishing programs. May pursue personal research as time allows.
UNIVERSITY AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICE (5%)
Serves on campus and system-wide advisory committees, special committees of the UC Davis Institute of the Environment and attends and assists NRS meetings and workshops as appropriate. As appropriate, may give special lectures and work with other units to achieve the campus and NRS missions.
SALARY:
Commensurate on experience level with a minimum salary of $72,015. Full benefits included.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sit or stand at desk for long periods of time.
Work outside in a wide range of temperatures and in remote locations.
Hike rough terrain, steep hillsides, rocks and cliffs.
Work in the presence of natural hazards such as poison oak and biting or stinging insects and wildlife.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to meet operational needs. Limited time off during peak periods.
Participate in Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Valid CA driver's license required.
Occasionally travel to attend meetings off-campus or out of state.
