The Wetzel and Howe labs in the Plant Resilience Institute at Michigan State University are hiring a postdoctoral research associate for a collaborative project that spans ecology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The project examines the ecological and biochemical resilience of milkweed plants and their insect communities to extreme heat events. A major goal is understanding the effects of stress timing and how timing differs across milkweed species from different climates. We will use biochemical and molecular approaches to advance our general understanding of the resilience of plants and plant-associated communities to environmental variability and to improve milkweed conservation in the face of climate change.
We are seeking a postdoc who can take this work to the next level by bridging our lab groups by working with ecologists and molecular biologists to link biochemical mechanisms to ecological processes. We are thus considering ecologists with strong chemistry skills or molecular biologists with experience or a strong interest in ecology/organismal biology. The initial appointment is for 1 year and expected to go for 2-3 years subject to annual review. Start date is negotiable, ideally in the first half of 2022. Duties will depend on the strengths of the candidate, but they could include planning and running lab and field studies, conducting lab work, supervising undergraduates and technicians, analyzing data, writing manuscripts, and presenting at conferences.
