The Morrison Lab in the Stored Product Insect and Engineering Research Unit (SPIERU) at the USDA-ARS Center for Grain and Animal Health Research (Manhattan, KS) invites applicants for a GS07-GS09 ($43,683-$69,462) permanent Biological Sciences Technician to support laboratory activities on the behavioral ecology, chemical ecology, and integrated pest management (IPM) of stored product insects. The overarching goal of the laboratory is to improve semiochemical-mediated, behaviorally-based IPM strategies for stored product insects in order to decrease reliance on insecticides.
The successful candidate will participate with team members and the lead scientist in all phases of research, determine the kinds and frequency of tests to be made, while operating and maintaining a variety of highly specialized behavioral and chemical ecology equipment. Additional duties will include maintaining inventories of chemicals, safely disposing of waste material, and making sure safety protocols are adhered to. Depending on the interest and aptitude of the candidate, there will be the opportunity for publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, and mentoring students.
We are preferably looking for a candidate with the following, 1) specialized experience is experience collecting, maintaining, and measuring biological samples related to insects or microbes, 2) experience recording, compiling, and interpreting research results and data using behavioral assays (Ethovision, cameras, flight mills, olfactometers, other assays), chemical ecology equipment (GC-MS, headspace collection, GC-EAD, SPME, etc), and/or insecticide work (laboratory sprayer, etc.), 3) excellent organizational, and written and interpersonal communication skills, 4) two full years of graduate level education, a Master's degree, or some combination of experience related to the position. Related degrees may include Entomology, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Biology or other related degrees.
