Research Professional – Blueberry Entomology (Sial Lab)

An opportunity to join a dynamic multidisciplinary team as Research Professional (with full benefits) is currently available in Blueberry Entomology Laboratory in Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602. The job will entail basic and applied research related to biology, ecology, and management of insect pests of blueberries and other small fruit crops grown in Georgia. The successful candidate must have working knowledge of insect pest management and implementation of field and lab experiments involving insect pests, and basic knowledge of experimental design, data collection and data analysis. A general understanding of insect rearing and colony maintenance is required. The ability to independently drive long hours to the field sites and perform field research under general outdoor conditions is essential. Overnight travel to the field sites may be needed based on location of the study sites. The understanding and ability to apply pesticides and conduct spray trials is required. The specific responsibilities include:
Working with the blueberry pest management lab members to design & implement field and laboratory research projects and supervision of lower level of staff and students. Responsibilities may include modification and changes in the research program in response to changing needs and overall program progress.
General research project management activities to include insect rearing and maintenance of the laboratory and interacting with growers and extension personnel in collaborative research.
Collection and analysis of data from field and laboratory research projects and assisting project director in interpretation of results and development of technical reports, and scientific presentations and publications.
Working with project director and other members of the blueberry team and other fruit crop researchers on collaborative studies.
Ideal candidate should have a Masters in Entomology or a closely related discipline, genuine interest and experience in applied entomological research (trial design, data collection, and data analysis), and be physically able to work independently in laboratory and field settings. Qualified candidates will be encouraged to continue further education and training including a PhD Entomology.
